This training should give you a very thorough understanding of how the Shader Tree in Modo works, and what its relative advantages and disadvantages are compared to other approaches such as node graphs.

Especially useful to beginners, this training takes a logical approach to understanding the Shader Tree, from basic functions to more advanced ones. Some of the topics covered include: how best to apply materials, how to create local overrides, how to manage your scene to have the ability to make global material changes, and how to assign textures with random variations.

Modo’s shading nodes are also covered, these can be used for special cases where you need to sample elements in your scene which will then drive aspects of your shading and texturing. There is also an in-depth overview of Modo’s gradients and how they can be used for a variety of different purposes.

Finally there is also a longer step-by-step video that walks you through the process of shading and texturing the vintage tape delay in the main illustration. I’ll show you how to create and apply convincing wear and tear to your materials to create photoreal shaders and textures. Particular attention is paid to creating convincing metals, with anisotropic maps as well as bump and roughness maps. Many of the textures used are derived from my existing kits, but all the assets required to follow along are also included in this training.

If you’ve ever found the Shader Tree confusing or if you’re curious as to what the best practices for shading in Modo are, then this training is for you.

So take the guesswork out of shading in Modo, and join me in Modo Shader Tree Fundamentals.
